Tablets and excipients Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is a Diluent?
inert substances added to increase the bulk weight of the tablet
What is the purpose of a diluent?
incrases ability to dispense if tablets are bigger
impossible to make a tablet with a small amount of drug only
What are examples of diluents?
Clay- Salts- Inert sugars- lactose mannitol sorbitol Polysaccharides- Starch-
What are binders?
becomes sticky and gluey upon wetting
What is the purpose of binders?
used to ensure tablet stays together and improves free flowing qualities to desired hardness and size
What are examples of common binders?
Inert sugars polysaccharides gums gelatin cellulose derivatives
What is the consiquence of too much binder?
makes tablet too hard and can not disintegrate
What is a lubricant?
water repelling materials
What is the purpose of a lubricant?
prevent adhesion of tablet to a surface by creating a barrier
improves flowability
What are examples of lubricants?
fatty acids
polyethylene glycols
Magnesium stearate
sodium lauryl sulfate
What is the purpose of glidant?
promote flow of the tablet granulation or powder materials
What are examples of glidants?
colloidal silicon dioxide
Talc
What is a glidant?
neg charged particles absorb on surface of granules to prevent interactions of granules
What is the purpose of disintegrant?
facilitate break up of tablet after administration
absorb water rapidly
What charactoristics contribute to rate of disintegration?
wettability and ability to swell
What are examples of disintegrants?
corn/potato starch
clays
polysaccharides
What is the purpose of colors and dyes?
disguise off color of drug
provide product identification
produce more elegant product
What problems can result from use of colors or dyes?
not photostable
What is the purpose of flavoring agents/artificial sweetners?
make the tablet palateable
used in chewable and dissolving tablets
What is the granulation process?
homogenous mixing of ingredients to improve flow and compressability
What is the wet granulation process?
most widely used
binding agent added to mixed powders via stirring
What are some cons to wet granulation?
timely and labor intensive
need to dry mixture- api can be moisture sensative
When is the dry granulation process used?
used for api sensative to heat, when tablet has sufficient binding properties
Why coat a tablet?
improves stability, masks odor/taste, easier to swallow, ID product, improve handling, modify drug release
