Tectonic Formations Flashcards

1
Q

Rift Valley formation

A
  1. Constructive boundary moves apart convection currents
  2. Heat flows through cracks creating bulges, stretching and fracturing plate
  3. Leads to chunks of crust to descend
  4. Areas on other side of valley rise creating Horst
  5. Area pulled leads to material bursting, forming flood basalts

Q

Ocean trench formation (similar to fold mountain )

A
  1. Form at destructive boundaries
  2. Dense oceanic plate melts or slides beneath continental plate - subjecting to create a trench underwater

Fold mountain formation

A
  • Form at destructive boundary
  • Dense oceanic plate melts or slides beneath continental plate - subjecting to form fold mountain on land

Q

Volcano formation

A
  1. Volcanoes form when magma from upper mantle in hotspot reaches its way to the surface
  2. Magma either forced out by converging boundaries or fills space left, erupting creating more material and growing further
