Temperature, Pulse and Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

Why should temperature, pulse and respiration be monitored?

A

for good husbandry

to get to know normal TPR ranges for individuals

veterinary nurses monitor TPR hourly

TPR is an important indication that an animal is well/unwell

Q

What is vaso-constriction?

A

where blood vessels narrow to reduce the amount of warm blood reaching the skin surface which slows down any radiation of heat from the skin into the environment

Q

What is vaso-dilation?

A

where blood vessels become wider to allow more warm blood to reach any skin surface that is in contact with the air so it can radiate heat into the environment

16
Q

What can decrease an animal’s heart rate?

A

sleeping
unconsciousness
relaxed

17
Q

Why is respiration monitored?

A

a change in breathing pattern can indicate severe diseases
important tool while animal’s are under anaesthesia

18
Q

Why does a change in respiration occur if there is a change in pulse rate?

A

the respiratory system is closely linked to the circulatory system

19
Q

What is capillary refill time?

A

lots of tiny capillaries in the gums

when an area in the gums is pressed blood is forced out of the capillaries

when the pressure is released the blood should immediately refill the capillaries

20
Q

What could indicate a slow refill time?

A

heart disease
shock
