Term 2- biology study cards Flashcards
(18 cards)
What does the skeletal-musculo system consist of ?
muscles that are attached to the skeleton
How do muscles work ?
they contract and relax
What do muscles need to perform work ?
need energy in the form of ATP
What happens when muscles contract ?
they shorten
What happens when muscles relax ?
they elongate
What are skeletal muscles ?
muscles that are attached to the skeleton and can move it
These muscles work…
opposable ( one is contracted well the other one is relaxed )
What do you call muscles that work oppasabble ?
muscle pairs/ antagonstic
What are tendons ?
connects muscles to bone, inelastic so that all the force produced in the muscle can be transferred to the bone
What are ligaments ?
connects bone to other bone, elastic for stretching when bones move
What is a joint
where two bones meet and allow movement
Why cant tendons be stretchy ?
it will only be able to flex, not flex and pull up
What prevents bones from rubbing against one another and creating pain ?
cartilage
What is cartilage ?
prevents friction and is a shock absorber
What is articulation ?
when two bones meet and there is a joint
What is in the spinal column ?
cartilage discs for flexibility and shock absorbers
What are the important function is the skeleton ?
protects important organs
helps with hearing
stores minerals
forms blood cells
allows movement
BOMMH
What does the human skeleton consist of ?
axial skeleton ( skull ribcage and spinal cord )
appendicular skeleton ( pelvis, shoulder girdle, arms, and legs
