** Definition:** A statement that appears to be self-contradictory or opposed to common sense, but upon closer inspection contains some degree of truth
Purpose: Adds layer of depth/cleverness

Definition: Refers to grammatical or rhetorical framing of words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs to give structural similarities
Purpose: Organizing force to attact the reader’s attention, Add emphasis/organization, Provides musical rhythm

Parallelism
Definition: An adjective that describes words, phrases, or general tone that is overly scholarly, academic or bookish
Purpose: Display high learning
Ex. Technical, legal writing
Pedantic
Definition: A work that closely imitates the style/content of another with specific aim of comic effect/ridicule
Purpose: Distort distinctive features of original, mimic work through repreating/borrowing to illuminate weaknesses

Definition: A sentence that presents its central meaning in a main clause at the end. Independent clause preceded by a phrase/clause.
Purpose: Add emphasis and structural variety

Periodic Sentence
Definition: Figure of speech in which the author presents or describes concepts, animals, objects by endowing them with human attributes/emotions

Definition: Perspective which a story is told

- Omniscient - presents thoughts and actions of any/all characters
- Limited Omniscient - presents thoughts and feelings of only one character but actions of all

Definition: One type of subject complement. An adjective or group/clause that follows a linking verb
Purpose: Modifies/describes the subject. Describe without adjective before verb/subject

Definition: 2nd type of subject complement. A noun, group of nouns/clause that renames the subject and follows a linking verb
Purpose: Create more descriptive objective
