Definition: Involves bitter/caustic language meant to hurt/ridicule
Purpose: Can be witty/insightful if well done. Cruel if poorly done.

Sarcasm
Definition: Work targets human vices/follies/social institution’s conventiions for reform/ridicule
Purpose: Effect varies with goal. Good is humorous and thought provoking

Definition: Explicit comparison with like, as, if
Purpose: Connect ideas

Definition: Evaluation of the sum of choices an author makes in literary devices
Purpose: Analyze, classify authors

Definition: Word/clause that follows a linking verb and complements
Purpose: Renames/describes a subject (Compliments subject)

Subject Complement
Definition: Word group contains both subject and verb(+ modifies). Cannot stand alone (not a complete idea).
Purpose: Structural variety. Help complete/support independent clause.

Subordinate Clause (Dependent clause)
Definition: A deductive system of formal logic that presents 2 premises (major and minor) which leads to a conclusion
Purpose: Present a specific and general idea without being direct

Definition: Use objects and occurences from nature to represent ideas commonly associated with them
Purpose: Represent something
