The Cold War was a war fought with words & diplomacy, not with weapons. It was fought to gain friends on one of two sides: either freedom or Communism. America fought Communism through the Marshall Plan, which aided recovering countries; the Truman Doctrine, which promised aid to any free country that resisted Communism; and NATO, a defensive alliance formed to stop Communism. America also fought Communists in Korea & Vietnam.
