  • 1 pseudonerogical: anything that involves nerves - numbness/tingling.

A. Persistent preoccupation w/ imagined/exaggerated physical defects.

B. Causes Distress.

More information: People with disorder believe that they are ugly or disfigured. They see themselves as ugly to other people.
It is hard for them to survive and keep a job, get a friend etc. This is only a physical defect.

A2. Has mood disorder, bipolar, major depressive disorder,or dysthymia.
B. Must have 2 weeks without mood disorder (rule out)

false beliefs. they are very paranoid about things. They think people are out to get them or that someone is going to poison them. They also think they are someone they aren’t i.e. Jesus

  1. delusions/hallucinations
  2. not disorganized/cataonic
    - have a hard time with interpersonal relationships.
    - grandeur hallucinations (they think that they are jesus)
    - Can live very productive lives.
    - men are more likely to have it. Onset 18 - 25

What is DISORGANIZED SCHIZOPHRENIA?

A

A. Disorganized speech (jumbled stuff. They don’t make any sense)
B. Disorganized Behavior (doesn’t make any sense)
C. Distorted/inappropriate affect: No feelings. Off in space. They are happy when you should be sad.
D. Not catatonic
E. Can be degenerative: The more you have it the worse it is.

What is CATATONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA?

A

Must have 2 or more of the following:

  1. Immobility (1&2 happen together)
  2. Excessive activity is purposeless
  3. Negativism: Resistance
  4. Bizarre posture/movements/mannerisms (4&5 go together)
  5. Echolalia/Echopraxia: Echo voice or echo movement
  • Very resistant to you. Could give you the silent treatment.

Meet criteria, but only around one episode.
- do well off meds
- have some symptoms but don’t interfere with daily life.
- withdraw socially
- meet the six month criteria
- major symptoms go away but little symptoms stay.

  6. indifferent to praise/criticism

  1. discomfort when not center of attention (1,3 &6 go together)
  2. provocative = reall annoying woman on the planet that throw themselves at people

  4. physical appearance for attention
  5. impressionistic speech
  6. Drama queen
  7. suggestible
  8. Relationships are more intimate (consider them closer: drink for an hour and then best friends forever).

  1. frantic to avoid abandonment (threats to keep you near)
  2. unstable/intense relationships
  3. identity disturbances
  4. impulsive in self-damaging ways (sex, drugs, money)
  5. suicidal gestures behaviors threats/self-harm) i.e. cutters
  6. affective instability
  7. emptiness. They feel empty
  8. Anger
  9. Transient paranoia/dissociation (paranoia is part f the abandonment/emptiness)

What are some examples of Borderline?

A

they do not experience relationships in adaptive ways. So they experience individuals in chaotic ways. They mistrust many individuals. They see rejection and abandonment way ahead of time and freak out because of it. They do suggestures to prevent this from happening. i.e. if you don’t come and love me in 5 minutes i will kill myself.

i.e. Abercrombie model, next week shaved head and a lesbian. Next week emo.

Treatment: Set a boundary, but do care. A high prevalence of people with this disorder who have been sexually abused. Most prevalent in women.

Self centered
Grandiosity, need for Admiration. Lacks empathy

5 or more of the following:

  1. Grandiose- (think they are super important)
  2. Fantasies of unlimited success/power/beauty
  3. Belief s/he is unique
  4. Excessive need for admiration. (need to feel that everyone looks up to them)
  5. Sense of entitlement - get whatever you want
  6. Interpersonally exploitative - use and abuse you
  7. Lacks empathy - just don’t care
  8. Envious
  9. Arrogant/attitude.

1. doesn’t conform to social norms (expectations, laws)

  5. Inhibited due to inadequacy - feel they won’t ever measure up.

What is OCPD?

A

Obsessive compulsive personality disorder. Personality disorder is rigidity about rules, details, and organization. Obsessions and compulsions aren’t a factor here.
