What lead to the start of the American revolution?

A
  • after the conquest, the colonists wanted more indépendance
  • the British raised American taxes in order to pay for the costly war against France and for the upkeep of the British army in North America

A

1764- sugar act- tax on many imported products including sugar
1765- stamp act- tax on every printed paper
1767- Townshed Act- tax on various imported products including glass…
1773- tea act- gave British east India company a monopoly over the tea trade

What was the reaction of the colonists from the new Taxes?

A

The colonists were upset, they claimed they should have no taxation without representation in the British parliament.
In 1773, they stormed 3 British ships anchored in Britain habour and threw chests of tea overboard

A

Massachusetts gov act- habitants of Massachusetts couldn’t vote
Quartering Act- uninhabited houses will house British soldiers
Quebec act- gave more rights and territory to the french
Boston port Act- Boston port closed until destroyed tea chests were reimbursed

When did the USA become its own sovereign nation?

A

United States of America signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It then became its own nation, but this was only recognized by the British after the treaty of Paris in 1783

Who had the monopoly over the fur trade in quebec?

A

No one! Their was competition over control on the fur trade. The companies such as Hudson’s Bay and north West wanted it each in their hands.

A

Britain recognizes USA as its own nation
USA gains territory from the British
Québec reduced in size- lost territory south of Great Lakes

Who were the loyalists?

A

Loyalists were habitants of the 13 colonies that were opposed to their independence. They supported Britain and the king. Most were farmers and from modest origins.

Where did the majority of loyalists flee to during and after the revolution?

A

Most of the loyalists settled in Nova Scotia and its territories. Some went to Quebec.

Name a few demands of the British loyalists and how this changed the colony demographically

A

The loyalists increased the proportion of English speaking colonists. 1% to 10%
This change had an impact on society because they had to pay attention to the demands of the British colonists.
(Wanted to live in a colony run by English, wanted an English civil law and the creation of a legislative assembly.)

What was the main population growth factor and which people made up the majority of Quebec’s population?

A

The French remained 90% of the population and continued to grow through natural increase. A canadien bourgeoisie formed, they also wanted a legislative assembly

What role did the British play in the economy?

A

The main exports remained fur, agriculture and fish.
British had control over fur and fisheries. The fur that went through montreal would now go straight to Great Britain. The British would collect fish, then ship off dried cod to to Europe, West Indies and South America. French had fishing rights, but the industry belonged to British. Most inhabitants worked as farmers. Wheat was main export, sold to British and at local markets.

What were some new ideas that developed during the period of enlightenment?

A

European politics, philosophy, science and communication changed.
All humans should have fundamental rights regardless of their social role.
(Equality, liberty, justice & property)
Right to express opinion and practice religion

What is liberalism and some of their beliefs?

A

Liberalism: an ideology that promotes freedom and equality
Liberals believed these fundamental rights to be of utmost importance.
Politically, they believed that the kings powers should be shared with elected representatives
Individuals should have rights to protect them from the abuse of power by monarchs.

In the liberal ideology, what were the 3 levels of power?

A
  1. Legislative- proposing and passing laws
  2. Executive- make sure laws are in effect and in place
  3. Judicial- the court system

After the USA got its independence, many other American colonies were inspired. Name some of these colonies that gained their independence as well.

A

French colony of saint-Domingue became Haiti
Spanish colonies in central & South America became Columbia, Argentina and Mexico.
The Portuguese American colony became Brazil

How did the spread of liberal ideas affect Canada?

A

Great Britain was able to maintain its power in Canada. However, The spread of liberal ideas did happen in these areas as well.
