INDICATION FOR A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET

A
  • T1DM, T2DM, GDM or insulin resistance patient receive a clear fluid diet due the following:
  • Loss of fluids and electrolytes
  • Preparing for bowel procedures
  • Recovering from a paralytic ileus or temporary reduction in bowel residue
  • Short-term use in the recovery of abdominal surgery or severe burns

CONTRA-INDICATIONS FOR A DIABETIC CLEAR FLUID DIET

A
  • If used for more than 24 hours under any condition
  • T1DM, T2DM, GDM and insulin resistance patients
  • With other known vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Gastrointestinal intolerance
  • Inadequate gastrointestinal function
  • Paralytic ileus
  • Suspected small bowl trauma
  • Perforation or obstruction of the ileus
  • It is also contraindicated when diabetic patients are fed parenterally rather than enterally

  • Provide an oral source of fluid
  • Small amount of energy and electrolytes to diabetes patients who have lost fluid and electrolytes through:
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Nasogastric suction
  • Fistula drainage
  • Infection
  • Burns
  • Minimise diabetic complications
  • Prevent dehydration
  • Reduce colonic residue to a minimum
  • Ensure optimal blood glucose control.
