Flashcards in The Ambiguous Lab values Deck (12):
1

Hematocrit- is the % RBCs in total blod vol
(male and female)

male: 42 - 52%
Female: 37 - 48%

< 20% pt may have SOB, tachycardia, fatigue... may result in cardiac failure/death
>60% spontaneous blood clotting

2

Hemoglobin

male: 13-18 g/dL
female: 12-16 g/dL

20 = increased viscosit, clogging cap, tissue ischemia

3

INR

Reference range: 0.8-1.0 (1:1 ratio of PT/PTT)
Therapeutic range: 2-3
Ther for MVR pts: 2.5-3.5
>3.5 = increased risk for bleeding
>5 = bed rest

4

Prothrombin time (PT)

Ref range: 10-13 secs

5

Partial thromboblastin time (PTT)

ref range: 20-35 secs

6

Platlets

150k- 350k
<20K(defer PT, spontaneous bleeding)

7

white blood cells

4000 - 11000

11000 = caution with exercise

8

Sodium (Na)

135 - 145 mEq/L or 130 - 150

-changes in mental status and cognitive issues

9

Potassium (K)

3.8 - 5.3

-gaureded tx, document/justify risk of continuing tx to offset risk for arrhyhmia or tetany

10

Glucose

< 70 (pt needs CHO before tx)
>240 (hold tx, until pt recieves insulin)

11

BUN

6-21

BUN increases with CHF

12

Creatinine

0.6-1.2

an increase = renal failure or metabolic impairment
