The Axial Skeleton Flashcards
(36 cards)
What part of the skeleton does the Axial skeleton refer to?
Skull, Vertebral Column, Thoracic Cage
How many bones are in the Cranium?
8
How many bones are in the Face?
14
How many bones make up the Vertebral Column?
33 vertebrae (26 bones, fusion)
How many bones make up the Sternum?
3
How many bones make up the Ribs?
24 (12 pairs)
What bones make up the Cranial roof?
Frontal, Occipital, and Parietal
What bones make up the Cranial base?
Frontal, Sphenoid, Ethmoid, Occipital, Parietal, and Temporal bones
What is a Suture?
Type of fibrous joint found only in the skull. Edges of different bones are tightly connected by a thin layer of connective tissue.
What bone makes up the ‘forehead’?
Frontal Bone
Where might you find the Mandible bone?
Lower jaw
What is sometimes referred to as the ‘cheekbone’?
Zygomatic
Where is the Maxilla located?
Upper Jaw
Where is the Hyoid bone found?
V-shaped bone at root of tongue.
Provides attachment for muscle (i.e., tongue)
Where might you find the ‘Coronal suture’?
Attaching the Frontal and Parietal bone, found superiorly at the top of the skull.
What is the bone that forms the sides and top of the Cranium?
Parietal
What bone is found at the back of the cranium?
Occipital
Where does the Spinal Cord attach to the Cranium?
Through the Foramen Magnus, a large opening in the Occipital bone.
What is the Sphenoid bone?
Forms the base of the cranium and has ‘wing-like’ projections.
Articulates with the frontal, parietal, and temporal bones.
What does Articulation mean?
Location where 2 or more bones meet and join.
Connection known as a ‘Joint’.
Where is the Lacrimal bone positioned?
Small bones behind and lateral to the nasal bones.
They are in the eye-socket.
What bone makes up the bridge of the nose?
Nasal bones.
Two small bones, articulate at the top with the Frontal bone.
Where is the Turbinator found?
Bones that form the lateral walls of the nasal cavity.
Upper and middle made of Ethmoid bone.
Where is the Palatine bone found?
Bottom of nose, eye cavities, and wall of the roof of the mouth.
Hence ‘palate’.
