The coast Flashcards
Hydraulic action?
Forces the rocks apart when the water is forced into rocks.
What do you call the process when loose rocks are thrown against the cliff wearing the rock away?
Abrasion action
Solution?
Seawater dissolves materials from the rock
What do you call the process when loose rocks are swirled around and are worn in smaller rounder pieces?
Attrition
What is the prevailing wind?
When the wind blows at an angle which causes the waves to approach the beach at an angle.
What is the aim of the Butler Model?
To explain what happens to a tourist industry in a location over a period of time
What are the two types of engineering at the coast?
HARD - building physical structures
SOFT - using nature to protect the coast
Features of CONSTRUCTIVE waves
big swash building the beach (deposition) low amplitude longer wavelengths quite gentle
Features of DESTRUCTIVE waves
big backwash steep high beaches high amplitude shorter wavelengths erodes the beach very quick
What 2 actions cause the arches, stacks and stumps?
hydraulic and abrasion
