Flashcards in The Earths Plates And The Mid Ocean Range Deck (11):
0

Name the main plates.

Pacific Plate, North American Plate, South American Plate, African Plate, Eurasian Plate, Antarctic Plate, Nazca Plate and Indo-Australian Plate

1

What was Pangaea?

The name given to the earth before it broke up into continents

2

What is the theory of 'Continental Drift'?

The plates separated.
Convection currents within the mantle cause the plates to move.

3

Name three plate boundaries. (Both words)

Divergent/Constructive
Convergent/Destructive
Passive/Transform

4

What happens at Divergent/Constructive plate boundaries?

Two plates separate

5

What happens at Convergent/Destructive plate boundaries?

Two plates collide

6

What happens at Passive/Transform plate boundaries?

Plates slide/push past each other

7

What happens when Divergent/Constructive plates separate?

Magma rises to fill the gap. Volcanoes and Mid Ocean Ranges are formed.

8

What happens when Convergent/Destructive plates collide?

Volcanoes and fold mountains are formed

9

What happens when Passive/Transform slide/push past each other?

Earthquakes occur

10

How is a Mid Ocean Range Formed?

When two plates separate, they create a gap.
Magma rises up from the mantle and fills the gap.
When the magma reaches the sea, it cools turns to rock.
This rock is what make the new ocean floor.
As this cycle goes on it starts to create underwater mountains.
These mountains get bigger and when they get to the top of the water they become islands (Volcanic Island)
