The Endocrine System Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are
Hormones
Released and carried by the blood
Long lasting effects
Change things that need constant adjustment
Act more generally
Role of the Pituitary Gland
-produced many hormones that regulate body conditions
-Master gland as it has impacts on other glands
Role of the Thyroid
Produces thyroxine which regulates metabolism, heart rate and temperature
Role of the Ovaries
Produce oestogen (puberty and mestuation)
Role of the Adrenal Gland
Produces adrenaline which is used for fight/flight responce
Role of the Testes
Produce testosterone which impacts puberty and sperm production
Role of the Pancreas
Produce insulin (regulates blood glucose level)
Role of the Insulin
Lower high glucose concentration in the blood by converting glucose to glycogen in the liver
Role of the Glucagon
Increase glucose concentration in the blood by converting glycogen to glucose from the liver
Type 1 Diabetes
Produces little to no insulin
Blood sugar levels can rise too high
Insulin injections
Type 2 diabetes
Resistant to insulin
Cause blood sugar levels to rise
Risk for overweight people
Controlled by carb-controlled diet and regular excercise
Menstrual cycle Days
-Day 1= period
-Day 4= Lining of uterus builds up again
Day 14= ovulation
Day 28= cycle restarts
Period hormones
Oestrogen
Progesterone
FSH
LF
Role of Oestrogen
Causes the uterus lining to grow
Stimulates the release of LH (releases the egg) and prohibits FSH
Role of Progesterone
Maintains the uterus lining and inhibits FSH and LH
Role of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
Pituitary gland
Causes the egg to mature and stimulates oestrogen
LH (Luteinising Hormone)
Pituitary gland
Causes ovulation
How can oestrogen be used to prevent pregnancy?
Inhibits the release op FSH which matures the egg
How can progesterone be used to prevent pregnancy?
Stimulates the production of a mucus which prevents the egg and sperm meeting
What hormones increase fertility?
FSH and LH
