the larynx Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the function of the larynx?
The larynx (voice box) routes air and food into the correct channels and plays a role in speech.
What is the structure of the larynx?
The larynx is formed by eight rigid hyaline cartilages and a spoon-shaped flap of elastic cartilage called the epiglottis.
What is the largest cartilage in the larynx, and what is its common name?
The largest cartilage in the larynx is the shield-shaped thyroid cartilage, commonly known as the Adam’s apple.
What is the role of the epiglottis?
The epiglottis is known as the “guardian of the airway.” It protects the superior opening of the larynx by allowing air to pass during breathing and covering the larynx when swallowing, directing food into the esophagus.
How does the epiglottis function when swallowing food or fluids?
Back:
When swallowing, the larynx is pulled upward, and the epiglottis tips to form a lid over the larynx’s opening, directing food into the esophagus and preventing it from entering the lungs.
What happens if something other than air enters the larynx?
If anything other than air enters the larynx, a cough reflex is triggered to prevent it from entering the lungs.
Why is it dangerous to give fluids to an unconscious person?
The cough reflex that protects the airway does not work when a person is unconscious, so giving fluids to an unconscious person can result in choking or aspiration into the lungs.
What are the vocal folds, and what is their function?
Back:
The vocal folds (or true vocal cords) are part of the mucous membrane of the larynx. They vibrate with expelled air, which allows us to speak.
What is the glottis?
Back:
The glottis is the slit-like passageway between the vocal folds in the larynx.
