The Nervous System Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the two parts of the nervous system
The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
Peripheral nervous system( sensory and motor nerves)
Nervous system overview
-Keeps all parts of our body in touch with each other.
-allows us to control muscles by gathering information from inside and outside the body
- the CNS processes the information and interprets it to make a decision on what to do
Cerebrum
Speech, memory, skeletal movements
Cerebellum
Balance and posture
The CNS
What is the spinal cord made up from
Sensory and motor nerves which send info between the body and brain
The CNS
What does the Brain do in the CNS
Interprets info, makes decisions and sends the decisions back through the spinal cord to parts of the body
The peripheral nervous system
What do sensory neurons do
Collect information from exteroceptors, proprioceptors and interoceptors
They also tell the brain what is happening inside and outside the body
Exteroceptor examples
Ears and eyes
Proprioceptors examples
Muscles and joints
Interoceptor examples
Heart and lungs
What do motor neurons do
Take instructions from the brain to the muscles and organs (control muscle action)
What are the two parts of the peripheral nervous system
Somatic nervous system- deals with info from our senses like light and sound
Autonomic nervous system- deals with info from our internal organs like lungs and heart
What are the two sub systems in the autonomic system
Sympathetic nervous system- fight or flight
Parasympathetic nervous system- calms and relaxes body
Information processing in the brain
-when a skill is being learnt they look at the demonstration and listen to instructions which are taking in through the extroroceptors, proprioceptors and the interoceptors
-this is transformed into neural info and sent to the brain. This is known as input
-your brain selects info that you think is importantly and disregards the rest
What are the three functions of the brain in performance of skill
- STSS- the brain selects info that is important and discards other info
- STM- info is held for up to 20 seconds
- LTM- makes sense of the info and compared to experiences and devices the best actions to take and transmits decisions to muscles
