9-11 forced a forgetting or repudiation of the past: numerous quotes about history beginning with 9-11. Imperial ghosting. What were we trying to rename and forget? Invoking ideas of fate and the unaccountable allow us to shear state violence if its historical complexity and political agency, so that ethical culpability is more easily cloaked, accountability concealed, and guilt disavowed.
