Thermal Flashcards
Internal energy of a body
The sum of the randomly distributed kinetic and potential energies of all the particles in the body.
Specific heat capacity, c, of a substance
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the substance by 1 K.
J kg-1 K-1
Specific latent heat, l, of fusion or vaporisation
The quantity of thermal energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance.
lv = l of vaporisation (melting/freezing) lf = l of fusion (boiling/condensing)
Boyle’s law
pV = constant
Charles’s law
V/T = constant
The pressure law
P/T = constant
Molecular mass
The sum of the masses of all the atoms that make up a molecule.
Molar mass
The mass that 1 mole of that substance would have. It is equal to the relative atomic mass of that substance.
Boltzmann’s constant, k
The gas constant for one particle of gas.
R = gas constant for 1 mol of gas
Mean square speed
The average of the square speeds of ALL the particles.
So the square of this gives you the typical speed (rms speed).
Has units of m2 s-2
Is the same as (Crms)^2
