BLACK...?

-least amount of heat and COOLEST object
may not be real cold..just COLDER than other objects

WHITE?

-most HEAT at scene (white-hot)
does not mean fire...only means it is HOTTER than rest of area being viewed

Shades of GRAY...

-temperature range between BLACK and WHITE

These shades of white, black and gray and their differences in colorization are known as THERMAL CONTRAST

some TICs also associate Red/orange

Low Contrast...

may occur in COOLER areas where there is lack of heat present and all objects are close in temperature

High Contrast...

more heat present, both generated and absorbed by objects, the CLEARER and SHARPER the image will appear...this is true until THERMAL SATURATION ...this occurs when everything in the viewing area is heated to temperatures beyond the capability of TIC

Changing Thermal Contrast..

Thermal Images thrive on HEAT.....as conditions change from cooler to hotter, back to cooler, images viewed by TIC will change...may indicate FIRE being in close proximity...be aware of change from LOW contrast (cooler/darker) to High (hotter/whiter)

EI or L indicates?

shift of the camera in modes to compensate for higher temperatures

Convected Heat...

white swirling waves or smoke...most often near ceiling area...when searching for fire or extension, operators should attempt to detect convected heat along with its direction and velocity sooner than later....may indicate location of fire

-object or heats source may be concealed by thickness or layering of material

-system status LED begins to flash green

-system status LED will flash 4 times to confirm effective button press

TIC is in HIGH HEAT (low sensitivity) mode
-indicated by BLUE L located in the lower left corner of the display
-when shifting into L mode, TIC will shutter and the image will freeze momentarily

When viewing scenes :

Low Heat- NORMAL (high sensitivity) mode, temp range 0-300 degrees F in normal mode (low heat) gauge(QUICK TEMP BAR GAUGE AND DTM) is GREEN

HIGH HEAT (low sensitivity) "L mode" (lower left corner) , temp range expands from 0-1000 degrees F and quick temp bar gauge and dTM change form green to BLUE

When colors yellow through red appear in LESS than 15% of viewed area, TIC may remain in Low Heat-NORMAL (high sensitivity)mode, providing greater detail with colors and the following occurs:

-quick temp bar gauge may spike
-camera will not shift to "L MODE"
-DTM continues to operate and may exceed 320 degrees F
