Tissues Flashcards
Chapter 5 (17 cards)
1
Q
What are the types of tissues?
A
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Nerve
- Muscle
2
Q
Epithelia Tissue
A
- Closely spaced
- Protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration
- Ex: Glands, Digestive tract, epidermis
3
Q
Connective Tissue
A
- More matrix than cells
- Supportive: binds other tissues together
- Ex: Blood, bone, cartilage, fat
4
Q
Nerve Tissues
A
- Contain excitable cells
- Internal communication
- Ex: Brain, spinal cord, nerves
5
Q
Muscle Tissue
A
- Contracts to cause movement
- Contains excitable cells
- Ex: Skeletal muscles, Heart
6
Q
What are special characteristics of epithelia
A
- Avascular (no blood flow)
- Close to connective (via the basement membrane)
- Regeneration
7
Q
How do you classify epithelia?
A
- Simple: one layer, good for absorption secretion and filtration
- Stratified: multiple layers, good for protection in high abrasion areas
Can be… - Squamous
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
8
Q
Simple squamous epithelium
A
- Single layer of flattened
- Good for diffusion and filtration
- Ex: Alveoli
9
Q
Simple cuboidal epithelium
A
- Single layer of cube-like cells
- Good for secretion and absorption
- Ex: Kidney tubules
10
Q
Simple columnar epithelium
A
- Single layer of tall cells, some with cilia
- Good for absorption and secretion of mucus (goblet cells)
- Ex: Digestive tract
11
Q
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
A
- Same as columnar
- Bear cilia and goblet cells
- Secrete mucus
- Ex: Trachea
12
Q
Stratified squamous epithelium
A
- Thick membrane of several cell layers
- Can be keratinized (surface layer of dead cell) or non-keratinized (no surface layer of cells)
- Good for protection
- Ex (keratinized): Epidermis
- Ex (non-keratinized): Esophagus
13
Q
Stratified cuboidal and columnar epithelia
A
Rare in the body
14
Q
Transitional epithelium
A
- Resembles both stratified squamous and stratified cuboidal
- Unique to the urinary tract
- Stretches and swells regularly
15
Q
Glandular epithelia
A
- A gland is one or more cells that makes and secretes an aqueous fluid
- The only important unicellular exocrine gland is the goblet cell
- Multicellular exocrine glands have a duct and a secretory unit
16
Q
What are the 4 classes of connective tissue?
A
- Connective tissue proper
- Bone
- Blood
- Cartilage
17
Q
What are the functions of connective tissue?
A
- Provide a structural framework
- Transport fluids nd dissolved material
- Protect delicate organs
- Store energy
