Q

Explain the role of the mucosa…

A

It has highly folded lining with numerous villi, base of the villi are crypts which secret mucous and digestive enzymes from Paneth cells. Epithelium is columnar and contains goblet cells which produce protective mucous. Has microvilli which increases the surface area for absorption of digested foods.
Each villus has a network of blood capillaries and a lacteal to absorb fats.

Q

What is the role of the submucosa?

Contains a rich blood supply and lymph vessels to carry absorbed nutrients away from the intestine toward the liver via the hepatic portal vein.
