Flashcards in Tissues (Description) Deck (23):
1

epithelial tissue Epithelium

Continuous sheet of cells that form protective barrier on body surfaces and passageways
Apical surface
Free surface facing body cavity, lumen, or surface
Basal surface
Bottom surface that adheres to an extracellular material
Basement membrane
Extracellular material that attaches the epithelial tissue to underlying connective tissue

2

simple squamous Epithelium

Single layer of broad, flat cells
Endothelium lining blood and lymph vessels and heart, air sacs of lungs, Bowman’s capsule kidney
Mesothelium of serous membranes

3

simple cuboidal Epithelium

Single layer of cube-shaped cells
Ovary surface; lens and retina; glands ducts

4

simple columnar Epithelium

Single layer of tall, column-shaped cells that can be nonciliated with microvilli or ciliated

5

pseudostratified columnar Epithelium

Single layer of nonciliated or ciliated cells attached to basement membrane but appears falsely stratified because nuclei are at different depths and not all have apical surface

6

stratified squamous Epithelium

Flat apical layer cells with more cuboidal basal cells that continually divide
Two types: keratinized or nonkeratinized

7

transitional Epithelium

Variable appearance with flat apical cells in response to stretch, returning to rounder appearance when pressure subsides

8

Glandular Epithelium

Endocrine
Secrete hormones
Enter interstitial fluid and then blood
Exocrine
Secretory products
Enter duct that empties onto skin surface or into lumen of an organ

9

Loose -Areolar Connective

Fibroblasts and many other types of cells with loosely intertwined collagen, elastic and reticular fibers in semi-fluid ground substance

10

Loose - Adipose Connective

Large triglyceride (fat) droplet with cytoplasm and nucleus pushed to periphery of cell

11

Loose - Reticular Connective

Cells spaced between fine, interlacing reticular fibers (liver, spleen, lymph nodes)

12

Dense Regular Connective

Regularly arranged parallel bundles of collagen fiber with few fibroblasts

13

Dense Irregular Connective

Irregularly arranged bundles of collagen fiber with few fibroblasts

14

Dense- Elastic Connective

Predominantly elastic fibers with fibroblasts between

15

Hyaline Cartilage

Chondrocytes found in lacunae (spaces) within resilient gel ground substance; fine collagen fibers not visible

16

Fibrocartilage

Chondrocytes found in lacunae (spaces) within resilient gel ground substance and thick bundles of collagen fibers

17

Elastic Cartilage

Chondrocytes found in lacunae (spaces) within resilient gel ground substance with network of elastic fibers

18

Osseous Tissue - Bone

Osteocytes found in lacunae
(spaces) within solid ground
substance with mineral salts and
collagen fibers

19

Blood Tissue

Various types of cells suspended in liquid extracellular matrix (plasma)

20

Skeletal Muscle Tissue

Long cylindrical, striated, with many nuclei at the periphery of the cell
Voluntary control

21

Cardiac Muscle Tissue

Branched, striated, with usually one centrally located nucleus; attached end-to-end by special intercalated discs
Involuntary control

22

Smooth Muscle Tissue

Small, tapering end cell with single nucleus in thickest middle of cell
Involuntary control

23

Nervous Tissue

Convert stimuli to electrical signals that they conduct to other neurons, muscle cells, or glands
