Flashcards in Topic 1 Deck (21):
1

What is the difference between a Eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic one?

Eukaryotic = complex and include animal/plant cells
Prokaryotic = small and simple

2

Cell wall?

Made of cellulose. Supports and strengthens cell

3

Vacuole?

Contains cell sap and maintains pressure

4

Chromosomal DNA?

One long circular chromosome. Controls cells activities and replication. Floats free. NOT NUCLEUS

5

Cells that are adapted to their function?

Specialised cells

6

Haploid cell? Examples?

A cell that contains only half the number of chromosomes. Egg + sperm cell.

7

What is the acrosome in a sperm cell?

It stores enzymes needed to digest its way through the cell membrane of an egg cell.

8

What is the function of a ciliated epithelial cell, and how?

To move substances. It does this by beating the cilia to move substances in one direction.

9

Define Resolution

How well a microscope distinguishes between 2 points that are close together.

10

Magnification equation

Magnification = Image size/real size

11

Define Substrate

The molecule changed in a reaction (enzymes)

12

Define active site

The part where an enzyme joins onto a substrate to catalyse a reaction

13

Rate of Reaction equation

1000/time

14

What does Benedict’s solution test for?

Sugars

15

What does Iodine test for?

Starch

16

What does the emulsion test test for?

Lipids

17

What does the biuret test used to test for?

Proteins

18

What is different about osmosis compared to diffusion?

Osmosis happens over a permeable membrane

19

Why is active transport different to diffusion? 2 reasons.

1) It’s against the concentration gradient
2) Energy is used

20

Why is active transport different to diffusion? 2 reasons.

1) It’s against the concentration gradient
2) Energy is used

21

Percentage change equation?

Final mass - initial mass
—————————— x 100
Initial mass
