What is mitosis?
Mitosis produces identical copies of cells and is used for growth, repair and asexual reproduction.
What are chromosomes?
Chromosomes are long molecules of DNA. There are 23 pairs in most human cells.
What are genes?
Genes are a long section of DNA that control characteristics.
What are the 5 stages of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis.
What happens in prophase?
Chromosomes shorten and thicken . Nucleus breaks down and spindle fibres begin to form
What happens in metaphase
Spindle fibres attach to the chromosomes and line up along the middle of the cell.
What happens in anaphase
Spindle fibres shorten and pull chromosomes apart to the poles of the cell
What happens in telophase
Membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form two new nuclei.
What happens in Cytokinesis
New cell surface membrane form to separate the two cells(daughter cells)
State all the stages of the cell cycle.
Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis
What happens in interphase
New sub cellular structures are made (eg mitochondria and dna replicates)
