topic 2: the heart Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is the heart
-an organ pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system
what muscle is the heart made from
cardiac muscle
what are the parts of the deoxygenated side of the heart
-pulmonary artery
-right atrium
-vena cava
-right ventricle
what does the coronary artery do
-acts as a natural pace maker
-supplies oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
how does the heart pump
-The heart has a group of specialised cells
-these generate electrical impulses and make the heart contract independently
-we say these cells act as a pacemaker
-they are located in the right atrium
how does blood flow on the right side of the
-deoxygenated blood comes through the vent cava into the right atrium
-the blood then goes down to the right ventricle through a valve.
-then the heart pumps and the blood goes back through the pulmonary artery.
-this then gets taken to the lungs
how does the heart pump on the left side
-oxygenated blood comes through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium
-it then goes down into the left atrium through a valve
-then it gets pumped out through the aorta all around the body
-left hand side is more muscular as it’s going all around the body
double circalorty system
1) Pulmonary circulation
RIGHT HANDSIDE:BLOOD FLOW
-VC-> RA-> RV-> PA-> lungs
-to remove waste products
-to pick up oxygen
2) Systemic circulation
LEFT HAND SIDE: BLOOD FLOW
-PV-> LA-> LV-> A-> Body
-to provide cells with oxygen for respiration
