Flashcards in Topic 4 Deck (21):
1

What is the word equation for photosynthesis?

Carbon dioxide + water -Light-> glucose + oxygen

2

What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?

6CO2 + 6H20 -Light-> C6H12O6 + 6O2

3

What are the 5 main ways plants use glucose?

For respiration
Making cellulose
Making amino acids
Stored as oils or fats
Stored as starch

4

What 4 things effect rate of reaction in a plant?

Intensity of light
Concentration of CO2
Temperature
Chlorophyll

5

What is a limiting factor?

One of the 3 factors is stopping photosynthesis from happening any faster.
E.g. Night, Winter

6

What is the equation for light intensity?

Light intensity(a.u.) proportional to 1/Distance(d)2

7

What is the inverse square law?

It means if you halve the distance, the light intensity will be four times greater.

8

How could you create artificial farming conditions?

A greenhouse which increases all of the limiting factors through trapping heat, artificial lights and paraffin heaters.

9

What is respiration?

Respiration is the process of transferring energy from glucose, which goes on in every cell.

10

Out of respiration and photosynthesis which is endothermic and exothermic?

Respiration- Exothermic
Photosynthesis- Endothermic

11

What 3 things do organisms use respiration?

To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (like proteins from amino acids).
In animals it’s used to allow the muscles to contact.
In mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady in colder surroundings.

12

What are examples of enzymes creating larger molecules from smaller molecules?

Lots of small glucose molecules are joined together in reactions to form starch.
Lipid molecules are each made from one molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids.

13

What are examples of enzymes breaking down larger molecules into smaller molecules?

Glucose is broken down in respiration.
Excess protein is broken down in a reaction to produce urea.

14

What is metabolism?

The sum (total) of all the reactions that happen in a cell or body.

15

What is the difference between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration?

Aerobic respiration is using oxygen while anaerobic is without oxygen.

16

What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?

Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water

17

What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?

C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H20

18

What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?

Glucose —> lactic acid

19

What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?

Glucose—> ethanol + carbon dioxide

20

What is anaerobic in yeast cells called and what is it used to make?

It is called fermentation and produces bread and alcoholic drinks.

21

What does anaerobic respiration lead to?

An oxygen debt which has to be “repaid” the oxygen that you didn’t get to your muscles in time.
