Tourism

The movement 50 miles away from a person's main place of residence, often includes an overnight stay

Beach holiday

Main purpose is to spend time on the beach, for sunbathing or water sports eg Spain

Activity holiday

Provides residents with a challenge, ie learning to paint, mountain climbing eg a trek through the Amazon rainforest

Short city breaks

Typically short breaks for couples who wish to see the sights of a city, enjoy a cultural/ heritage break eg visiting Paris from London via Eurotunnel

Health tourism

Includes a form of health treatment eg travelling to Budapest from the UK for cheap dentistry

Heritage and cultural tourism

When people visit sites of national of world importance in order to earn about the past eg Hindu temples in Sri Lanka

Political factors regarding tourism growth

Collapse of Soviet Union in 1990 means people can move freely through Europe
Relaxed border control in China, Chinese citizens are free to travel the world
EU allows free travel between all member states, removes the need for a passport, easier

Social reasons regarding tourism growth

Ageing population means people can spend their retirement travelling (Grey Pound)
Media eg TV has increased people's knowledge of faraway destinations
People are having fewer children, do not have to invest money in children, have the ability to travel more

Economic reasons regarding tourism growth

World is becoming richer as more countries develop, increases amount of disposable income
Employment laws mean that people now get 4-6 weeks of paid employment leave a year
Access to credit card loans mean that people can visit areas without having the money saved up
Introduction of package holidays means that large quantities of holidays are bought in bulk, driving down the price

Package holidays

Cost of flight, transport and accommodation is paid for, cheaper than buying everything separately

Exploration

Very few tourists, very few facilities, people come to enjoy the natural beauty of the area as it is unspoiled, many are on package holidays

Involvement

Number of tourists rise steadily, locals begin to notice a 'tourist season', some facilities eg shops are set up, run by locals, government begins to advertise the area to locals

Development

Number of tourists rises rapidly, locals begin to dislike tourists, many of whom are on package holidays, upto-date facilities are set up, not run by locals

Consolidation

Maximum number of tourists, peak number of facilities, rate of development slows down, nearly all tourists are on package holidays

Stagnation

Resort becomes less popular, facilities become old and shabby and begin to work below their capacity

Decline

Number of tourists fall dramatically, local economy duffers, people begin to lose their jobs, fewer people visit

Rejuvenation

Resort rebranded and regenerated, money is invested into improving facilities and locals return to resort
