Transfer of thermal energy Flashcards
what is conduction
moving from a higher temperature to a lower temperature
what is the best conductors
diamond
silver
copper
worst conductors
glass wool
rubber
wood
what is an insulator
a material that is a bad conductor
why are metals good conductors?
delocalised electrons. can carry energy when heat is transferred.
what is convection
heat transfer in fluids. when heated fluid is less dense and rises and colder fluid sinks
what is a convection current
is a movement of fluid that carries energy from a warmer place to a cooler on.
where can heat be lost in the house
through the roof through windows space around the door through the walls through the floor
how can heat leave the house
can be lost via radiation through the walls
what does insulating material do
reduces heat loss via conduction
mnemonics for all the forms of energy
Most Kids Hate Learning GCSE Energy Names
magnetism kinetic energy heat (thermal) light gravitational potential chemical sound elastic electrical nuclear
radiation
all objects give out and take in thermal radiation, which is also called infrared radiation. the hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation emits.
infrared radiation is a type of electromagnet radiation that involves waves. doesn’t need a medium and no particles are needed.
if two objects are the same material and have the same volume, the flat thin one will radiate the most heat energy faster than a fat object. that is why there are radiators in a domestic household.
Infrared radiation.
travels by EM waves and can therefore travel in a vacuums as they do not require particles.
