What is the aetiology for T2DM?

A

• Reduced insulin secretion ± increased insulin resistance
• Other possible causes
o Drugs: steroids, anti-HIV drugs, newer anti-pyschotics and thiazides
o Pancreatic: pancreatitis, surgery, trauma, pancreatic destruction, pancreatic CA
o Hormonal: Cushing’s syndrome, acromegaly, phaeochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy
o Others  congenital lipodystrophy and glycogen storage disease

What are the symptoms of hyperglycaemia?

A
o	Polyuria
o	Polydipsia
o	Unexplained weight loss
o	Visual blurring
o	Genital thrush
o	Lethargy

What is the treatment algorithm for T2DM?

A
  1. METFORMIN OR sulfonylurea/a-glucosidase inhibitor
  2. SULFONYLUREA OR metformin/a-glucosidase inhibitor/DPP-4 inhibiotor/thiazolidinedione
  3. BASAL INSULIN/PRE-MIX OR a-glucosidase inhibitor/DPP-4 inhibiotor/thiazolidinedione OR GLP-1 agonist
  4. BASAL + MEAL TIME INSULIN
