Types of Data Flashcards
What is quantitative data?
Data that is measured using numbers
What is qualitative data?
Data that is measured non-numerically (e.g. words, symbols, pictures)
What is discrete data?
Give some examples.
Data that can be counted
Examples:
-goals in a game
-number of siblings
What is continuous data?
Give some examples.
Data that can be measured
Examples:
-height
-weight
-time
What is primary data?
Data that you have collected yourself or someone has collected on your behalf
What is secondary data?
Data that you have gotten from another source
What are the advantages of primary data?
-more reliable
-you can choose how the data is collected
-you can choose exactly what data to collect
What are the disadvantages of primary data?
-time-consuming to collect and process
-can be expensive (especially if you are paying someone else to do it for you)
-can be difficult to access a suitable sample
What are the advantages of secondary data?
-quick to get a large amount of data
-cheap to get a large amount of data
What are the disadvantages of secondary data?
-could be out of date
-don’t always know how it was collected
-may not be accurate
-could be biased
-might not get exactly what you need
What is raw data?
Data that has not been processed yet
What is bivariate data?
Data that contains two variables about one item
What is multivariate data?
Data that contains more than two variables about one item
Ordinal data has a ___
scale
Advantages of grouping data
-easier to read and process
-easier to see patterns and compare the different classes/groups
