What is the continental drift theory? (in your own words)
Continental drift theory is that there was a big continent called Pangea. It eventually split up because of plate tectonics into the continents we know today.
Why do Earthquakes occur? (Use crust, tectonic plates, mantle, core, slabs, subduction, collide)
The Earth is made of a crust, mantle, and core. The crust is made of tectonic plates that “float” on the mantle. The plates are unbending slabs. Earthquakes happen during subduction, or when one plate goes under the other. It also happens when two plates collide and slip.
What are the five oceans?
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic
What percentage of the earth does the Pacific Ocean cover?
28%
What are the two ways tsunamis are caused?
Underwater Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions
What is the last name of the man who “baptized” the Pacific Ocean “el Pacifico”?
Magellan
What is the meaning of Melanesia?
Islands of Black
What is the meaning of Polynesia?
Many Islands
What is the meaning of Micronesia?
Tiny Islands
True or False: Continental islands are still connected to the continent by an underwater continental shelf.
True
True or False: Continental islands have a wider variety of plants and animals than volcanic island or atolls.
True
True or False: Volcanic Islands are often formed by the subduction of one plate under another.
False
How were the Hawaiian Islands created?
They were created by tectonic plate movement over a hot spot in the earth’s surface far from the nearest plate boundaries.
Low island can be
A. Volcanic high Islands that have been worn down nearly to sea level
B. Formed from coral reefs
C. Both
C
True or False: The coral polyp is an animal.
True
What do corals eat?
Plankton
True or False: Corals can reproduce with each other or without.
True
What percent of corals are endangered?
60%
What is the goal that was set by the United Nations for the ICRI?
It is to stop and reverse the global destruction of coral reefs.
What do algae give to corals that is essential to their life?
The algae help coral take calcium out of the water and help cement the coral skeletons together.
What do corals give to algae that is essential to their life?
The coral gives the algae animal waste, which is plant fertilizer.
Explain what happens when an atoll is in the making. (Use sinking and eroding volcano, barrier reef, lagoon)
