General Sherman’s Special Field Order #15 instituted: ‘40 Acres and a Mule’
Sherman issued this order so that each family can have forty acres of land. The land they can settle on stretches from northern parts of South Carolina to Georgia and Florida.
Why they created ‘40 Acres and a Mule’ ?
African-Americans need places to live after being set free. Don’t want to live among whites because of the prejudice so deeply engrained in them. African-American’s had a meeting with Sherman and told him having land to work on would help them take care of themselves. They want to be placed on land until they are able to buy it and make it there own.
