Q

Limitations of the Oximeter: what tissues and cells can it test?

A

It can only read oxygen levels in the blood, not oxygen levels in any other cells.

Q

Oximeter: Primary uses

A

It’s used to monitor the amount of oxygen carried in the blood. changes in patients conditions

9
Q

Limitations of the Oximeter: Carbon Monoxide poisoning

A

hemoglobin binds with CO1, so you can still get a reading within an acceptable range.

Q

Limitations of the Oximeter: Hypothermia

A

reduced circulation means that there won’t necessarily be enough blood in the fingers to obtain a reading.

Q

Limitations of the Blood Oximeter: Shock

A

Shock causes inadequate blood profusion, so there won’t be enough blood in the extremities to get a reading.

Q

How does a pulse oximeter work?

A

It uses a red laser to detect the shade of the arterial blood. The shade of blood is different depending on how much oxygen is present.

Q

Limitations of the Blood Oximeter: Nail polish/fake nails

A

Both can block the laser

17
Q

How do you record pulse oximetry?

A

On a 24 hr cllock, the saturation percentage, the patients air supply (room, or oxygen)
Do it several times, note changes
ex: 0845hrs - 80% RA (Room Air)
2215hrs - 99% with O2 (Oxygen)
