Unit 3: Animal Behavior Flashcards
(14 cards)
Fixed Action Potential
Simple and innate behavior.
Sign stimulus => FAP => Continues until completion or sign stimulus is removed.
Communication
Transmission and reception of signals (sound, visual, chemical)
Signal
Something that can cause a change in behavior
Conspecific death
Animals are more likely to avoid dead/injured members of their own species
Imprinting (learned behaviors)
Learning to identify “parent”, sensitive period of development
Spatial Learning (learned behaviors)
Cognitive map (from memory), using landmarks to help navigate
Associative Learning (learned behaviors)
Associating stimulus/behavior with a reward or punishment
Two types of associative learning
Classical Conditioning- associating arbitrary stimulus with reward or punishment
Operant Conditioning- associating behavior with reward or punishment
Cognition (learned behaviors)
Pattern recognition, problem solving
Social Learning (learned behaviors)
Learning from observing others
Optimal Foraging Theory
Maximize benefits/gains, minimize costs/risks
Altruism
Putting self at risk to help others
“for the greater good” => for the entire population => enhances individual survival
Kin Selection (altruism)
Parents want genes to pass onto the next generation
Reciprocal Altruism (altruism)
Selfless behavior needs to go both ways.
“Cheaters” are punished.
