Flashcards in unit 4 quiz 1 Deck (18):
what what are the functions of the skeletal system?
support, protection, movement, storage of minerals, production of red blood cells, and energy storage
the bones help support and give points of attachment for tissues, muscles, and ligaments in the body
protects soft and delicate internal organs
the freely movable joints are divided into four groups, ex ball and socket
storage of minerals (bones)
ex of mineral
minerals like calcium are stoed in bones till they need to be distributed in different parts of the body
-ex of mineral is calcium
production of red blood cells (bones)
red blood cells are produced in the red marrow of bones
energy storage (boes)
the yellow marrow in bones have adipose cells---these adipose cells are fat cells ---very important source of energy
what are long bones?
long bones have an elongated shaft and two expanded ends on the sides of the shaft
ex. femur and fibula
what are short bones?
short bones are short in posture and can be any shape

function of artciular cartledge?
the plate serves as a joint surface for bone
what is compact bone?
dense bone tissue composed of osteons
function of compact bone?
resists pressure and protects spongy tissue
function of diaphysis?
begins endichral ossification
function of endosteum?
provides nutrients to osseous tissue and provides a supply of osteoblasts for repair and growth
the space in the interior diaphysis of a long bone which has no spongy bone
