Unit 6 Flashcards
Neuron
Nerve cell
Nervous system
The body’s control system
Synapse

Neurotransmitters
Stored chemicals
Central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord
Brain
The most important organ of the nervous system
Spinal cord
A long, tubular bundle of nerves that extends downward from the brain
Peripheral nervous system
All the nerves that run throughout the body
Somatic nervous system
Responsible for activities that are under conscious control
Autonomic nervous system
Responsible for activities that are not under conscious control
Cerebrum
The largest part of the human brain
Cerebellum
Located beneath the cerebrum
Controls body movements, posture and balance
Brain stem
Carries information between the spinal cord and the rest of the body
Cerebral hemispheres
Two halves of the cerebrum (right and left)
Corpus callosum
A thick bundle of nerves that connect the cerebral hemispheres
