Unseen fieldwormk Flashcards
define random sampling
each member of the population have an equal chance of being chosen
define systematic sampling
samples are chosen in a regular way e.g. every 2 metres, every 10th person etc
define stratified sampling
sample broken down into sub groups e.g. residents and non-residents
define primary data
information that you have collected yourself e.g. questionnaire, land use survey
define secondary data
information someone else has previously collected e.g. from the internet, census data, crime statistics
examples of data collection equiptment (4)
quadrat,ranging poles,callipers,trundle wheel
define discrete data
data with clear spaces between values e.g. pedestrian counts
define continuous data
data that falls in a continuous sequence e.g. temperature
examples of quantitative data presentations (5)
pie charts,bar charts,histograms,line graphs, pictograms
define quantitative data
to do with numbers and statistics
define qualitative data
to do with words and meanings
Examples of qualitative data presentations (2)
word clouds, annotated photos
give an advantage of word clouds
can be useful to present analysis findings from a questionnaire, can show perceptions of an area
give an advantage of annotated photos
highlights points from images to help underpin the enquiry
give a disadvantage of word clouds
no in depth analysis or comparisons
give a disadvantage of annotated photos
overlapping lines can be hard to understand, can be biased as the student selects parts to photograph
what is a GIS?
geographical information systems, use of maps to digitally combine data and link to positions on a map
how are GIS plotted?
using the recorded coordinate of the location you can plot data on the map
advantages of GIS (2)
can show multiple information on map, enables you to look for patterns/links
disadvantages of GIS (2)
some software can be complicated, too many layers can be difficult to see
what are measures of central tendency?
mean,mode,median,range
what are dispersion graphs used for?
to show a range of data
