A glass ceiling is an invisible batter that women phase when seeking promotions to top jobs

What laws were put in place to prevent pay gap
A
Equal pay act 1970
• made it illegal to pay women less then men for the same job
Sex discrimination act 1975
• made it illegal to discriminate against women in terms of employment promotion and harassment
Equal opportunity commission EOC 1975
• introduced same time as sex discrimination In 2006 EOC was incorporated into the equality and human rights commission

What evidence is there that the gender inequalities have been reduced
A
- a report in 2009 by the university of Cambridge there are more women than men in high status jobs like medicine and law
- more women are employed than ever before in 2014 there was almost as many women working as men
- pay gap is falling was at its lowest ever for full time
- there are many successful women out in society eg Nicola sturgeon
- the number of female mps have rose from 208 to 220
