Upper Limb Flashcards
Describe superficial veins
- Located in superficial fascia
- Generally visible through skin
- Tributaries to deep veins beneath deep fascia
Describe cutaneous nerves
- Located in superficial fascia
- Not visible thru skin
- Branches of brachial plexus deep to deep fascia
Name the veins of the upper limb
- Cephalic
- Basilic
- Median cubital
- Dorsal venous arch
What does the cephalic vein drain?
It drains the posterior/lateral aspect of UL
Where does the cephalic vein run?
It runs in the deltopectoral groove and pierces deep fascia
What is the cephalic vein a tributary to?
The axillary vein (drains into)
What does the basilic vein drain?
Drains the anterior/medial aspect of the upper limb. The basilic vein pierces the deep fascia of the arm
What does the basilic vein drain into?
Brachial vein
What does the median cubital vein connect?
The cephalic and basilic veins
Where is the median cubital vein located?
in the cubital fossa
What is the median cubital vein used for?
I.V. vein for venipuncture..
intravenous fluid injection
drawing blood
Where is the dorsal venous arch of the hand and what does it drain?
It arches across the dorsal surface of the hand and drains the superficial dorsal veins of hand
What does the dorsal venous arch of the hand drain into?
Both the cephalic and basilic veins
What can the dorsal veins of the hand be used for?
Venipuncture
- intravenous fluid injection or drawing blood
Deep fascia of the arm = ?
brachial fascia
