Why is the population of urban areas increasing?

• In the developed world the majority of people live in cities, but the urban population has only slightly increased since 1945 as during the Industrial Revolution many people moved
• In the developing world most people currently live in rural areas, but this is changing as old cities are growing and new cities are emerging
• Eg, in Beijing China the urban population increased from 4.4 million in 1970 to 20.4 million in 2015
