Flashcards in Urinary System Deck (26):
1

Kidney Measurements

10cm long
2.5 cm thick
5cm wide

2

Kidney Measurements

10cm long
2.5 cm thick
5cm wide

3

Where are the kidneys located in regards to the vertebral column and ribs?

T12, L1, L2, L3 and in front of the 12th rib

4

Kidneys - retro or interperitoneal?

Retroperitoneal

5

What sits on top of the kidneys

Adrenal glands

6

Which kidney is lower than the other and why

Right is lower due to liver

7

Describe difference between cortex and medulla

Cortex = outer, paler and continuous
Medulla = inner, darker and discontinuous pyramids

8

What do the hilum structures sit within

The renal sinus

9

Describe renal sinus

Where the hilum structures sit in
Filled with fat

10

What is the covering of the kidneys called

Fibrous capsule

11

What surrounds the fibrous capsule

Perirenal fat

12

Describe the pathway of urine from the base of a medulla

Base -> papilla -> minor calyx -> major calyx -> renal pelvis -> ureter -> base of bladder -> urethra

13

What is the position of the hilum

Anteromedially

14

Why is the abdominal cavity kidney shaped?

The vertebral column pushes into the space post

15

What are the structures found in the kidney hilum and what is their order from anteriorly to most post

Most ant -> Renal Vein
Middle -> Renal Art
Most Post -> Renal Pelvis
* Plus vessels and lymph vessel

16

What are accessory renal arteries and why do some people have them?

During development the kidneys move in relation to the rest of the body, so they were much lower . Move up due to differential growth rate. Loose vessels as the body grows and gain new ones, some of the old ones do not obliterate and still hang around

17

Where are the ridges found on the detruser muscle

Everywhere except the trigone

18

What makes up the points of the trigone

Two uterers and the apex is made by the urethra

19

What happens when the bladder is full

Pushes UP into abdominal cavity

20

Where are the ligaments of the bladder found

Posteriorly at the base of the bladder where the urethra enters --> stabilises when bladder is full

21

Describe pathway of the ureter

Down post wall, over the brim, down the pelvic wall and into the bladder from behind

22

What are the structures found in the kidney hilum and what is their order from anteriorly to most post

Most ant -> Renal Vein
Middle -> Renal Art
Most Post -> Renal Pelvis
* Plus vessels and lymph vessel

23

How long is the ureter

25 - 30 cm long

24

What are the three narrowings of the ureter and where are they found

Ureteopelvic junction --> top
Pelvic inlet/brim --> middle
Entrance to bladder --> bottom

25

Why is the abdominal cavity kidney shaped?

The vertebral column pushes into the space post

26

What is the muscle of the bladder called

Detruser muscle
