Virus And Bacteria Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are viruses made of?
Are they living?
Are they cells?
Nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) and protein coat
Not living
Not made of cells
Define taxonomy
Science of classifying living things
What do viruses do to living cells
They inject their genetic material. Causing cells to reproduce the virus
Examples of viruses?
Common cold, HIV, chicken pox, influenza, small pox, Ebola
Antibiotics are used to treat what?
Bacteria. Do NOT work on viruses
How are viruses spread
Air, direct contact, blood, sexually transmitted
Bacteria are prokaryotic
No nucleus
No organelles
What are the 3 shapes of bacteria
Bacilli
Cocci
Spirilla
What type of bacteria does photosynthesis
Cyanobacteria
Bacterial infections
Tuberculosis, strep throat, pneumonia, e. Coli, staph infections
What does increased use of antibiotics cause
The bacteria become immune. Trade resistance genes through plasmids.
Examples - tuberculosis and staph infections
Helpful bacteria examples
Used in production of cheese and yogurt, produce Vitamin K in intestines, incredible decomposers
