Flashcards in Virus And Bacteria Deck (11):
1

What are pathogens??

A bacteria/virus that can cause a disease

2

What is the difference between bacteria and a virus?

Bacteria release toxins and viruses damage our cells

3

What is bacteria?
Structure

Microscopic organisms

They are LIVING cells and can multiply rapidly in favourable conditions

They are SINGLE celled

4

What are endospores

Dormant forms of bacteria
They form when the bacteria are starved of a particular nutrient, it triggers a survival method and the spores reproduce
They can survive harsh environment, disinfectant won't kill it

5

Diseases caused by bacteria .....

Mastitis
Tuberculosis
Anthrax
Tetanus
Kennel cough
Scale rot

6

Why may bacteria by useful?

Helps break down organic matter in soil. E.g. Manure and remains of plants

Helps rabbits and horses digest cellulose in the large intestines

7

Virus structure

Very small
DNA are enclosed in a protein coat

8

What happens when a virus gets in an animal system

It makes a hundred thousand copies of itself and eventually will fill the host cell and burst it open, the virus is then passed through the blood stream

9

Why are viruses hard to control

Viruses change their form when attacked, this helps them survive

Viruses are also resistant to antibiotics

10

How do viruses transmit

Indirect and direct transmission

11

Examples of viruses

Rabies
Canine parvovirus
Feline leukaemia virus
Feline infectious enteritis or Feline panleucopaenia
Distemper
Canine infectious hepatitis
Cat ‘flu
Myxomatosis
Equine Herpes Virus
West Nile Virus
