Viruses- Gurr Flashcards
(30 cards)
viral diseases which are caused by single stranded RNA
Foot and mouth, HIV, Swine flu, TMV
viral diseases caused by double stranded RNA
blue tongue
viral diseases caused by single stranded DNA
herpes and chickenpox
viral diseases caused by double stranded DNA
gemini virus
foot and mouth disease
SS_RNA
- ulcers–> making milk less valuable. Doesn’t cause death.
- caused by an Aphthovirus
which virus caused foot and mouth disease
Aphthovirus
blue tongue disease
DS-RNA.
- mouth obsesses
- swollen tongue and muscle fatigue
avian flu
SS-RNA
-only a few deaths, high scare mongering
swine flue
122 deaths in UK, doctors worried it would turn into an epidemic
Tobacco mosaic virus
SS-RNA
- plants
- oncogenic trigger
mycoplasms
Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lack a cell wall around their cell membrane. Without a cell wall, they are unaffected by many common antibiotics such as penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis.
size of mycoplasms
0.1um
how many genes does a mycoplasma have
650
mycoplasms structures
lack an enveloped nucleus. Gram _ve bacteria which have lost their cell wall.
mycoplasms cause disease to
plants and animlas
diseases mycoplasms cause
peach yellow and elm phloem necrosis
mycoplasm pneumoniae
severe coughing, conjunctivitis- death
mycoplasms can look like
spirals or fried eggs
what is the outside of the mycoplasm made of
lipoproteins
there are …. kingdoms and … domains
5 kingdoms and 3 domains
example of protists
algae, protozoa, slime moulds, water moulds/oomycetes
slime moulds are distinguishable because of their
bight colour- red, orange or yellow
slime moulds like mycoplasms do not have a
cell wall
slime moulds are either
cellular or acellular
