Flashcards in Vocab Deck (16):
1

electronegativity

A chemical property that describes the tendency of an atom or a functional group to attract electrons (or electron density) towards itself

2

Electron affinity

amount of energy released when an electron is added to a neutral atom or molecule to form a negative ion

3

oxidation

A reaction in which the atoms in an element lose electrons and the valence of the element is correspondingly increased

4

ionization energy

The energy required to remove completely an electron from its atom.

5

ionic bond

A chemical bond between two ions with opposite charges, characteristic of salts. Also called electrovalent bond.

6

covalent bond

A chemical bond formed by the sharing of one or more electrons, especially pairs of electrons, between atoms

7

non-polar covalent

perfectly equal sharing.non metal

8

polar covalent

electron are shared but not equally by two non-metal

9

isomers

same molecular formula but different structure

10

isoelectronic

Isoelectronic refers to two atoms, ions or molecules that have the same electronic structure and same number of valence electrons.

11

same number of protons in each atom, they differ in neutron numbers

same number of protons in each atom, they differ in neutron numbers

12

dissociation

ionic compounds (complexes, or salts) separate or split into smaller particles

13

quanatized

Expressed or existing only in terms of discrete quanta; limited by the restrictions of quantization.

14

octet

states that elements gain or lose electrons to attain an electron configuration of the nearest noble gas.

15

ground state

The lowest allowed energy state of an atom, molecule, or ion.

16

period

refers to a horizontal row of the periodic table.
