Aria
solo vocal piece backed by an orchestra
Recitative
A song for a soloist which tells the story and moves it along. Its performed half spoken and half singing style
Chorus
Whole chorus or choir sings together (SATB)
Oratorios
Tell bible stories and are not usually acted out with scenery and costumes
Cantata
Performed by solo singers, orchestra and the chorus and is a piece made up of a number of Arias, separated by recitatives
Chorale
Hymns- simple language and melody and easy to sing
Motet and Anthem
Motet: Short piece of music sung by a choir in church. Written for Roman Catholic Churches.
Anthem: written for Protestant churches.
Both are polyphonic
Mass
Roman Catholic church service
Madrigals
written in the 1500-1600s and usually about love or the countryside
Lieder
Romantic songs for one singer and a piano. they tell a story and are usually based on German poems. Often dramatic and full of emotion.
