Volcanoes Flashcards
(10 cards)
magma chamber
where the magma is stored
vent
a pipe which magma rises through
crater
bowl shape depression at the top of the volcano
secondary vents
another small vent on the side of the volcano
fumaroles
pipe which releases gases allowing them to rise to the surface
lava flows
river of molten rock which flows down the sides of the volcano
volcanic bomb
molten parts being thrown into the air
whats emitted from volcanoes
ash, gases, dust, steam
composite volcanoes
(conical volcano) cone shaped, they form at destructive boundaries. It has steep sides due to the magma erupting and setting immediately so it just drys on top of that making a cone shape. has a high viscosity (thick slow flow) e.g vesuvius famous destruction of pompeii & Herculaneum (both claimed thousands of lives)
Shield volcanoes
built of fluid lava, they are large and lie looking like a warriors shield. They are low viscosity (high lava flow) most active volcano in the world is in Hawaii called Kilauea
