Flashcards in W5 Deck (17):

1

## probability

### the mathematical likelihood of a given event occuring, ranges from 0-1

2

## statistical significance

### a difference that is large enough that it is not likely to have occured because of chance or sampling error

3

## mathematical difference

### if numbers are not exactly the same, they are different

4

## mathematically important differences

### if the difference is sufficiently different

5

## hypothesis

### a prediction of what outcome will occur in the population, using the sample

6

## the null hypothesis (H0)

### the opposite of your prediction, there is not enough evidence to conclude a difference

7

## the alternative hypothesis (H1)

### there is enough evidence to suggest a relationship

8

## the larger the difference between the two variables.. the greater the likelihood the null hypothesis is true OR false

### false

9

## decision rule

### rule or standard used to determine whether to reject or accept the null hypothesis

10

## state the types of error

###
type 1 error

type 2 error

11

## type 1 error

### rejection of the null hypothesis when in fact it is true

12

## type 2 error

### failure to reject the null hypothesis when in fact it is false

13

## two-tailed tests

### testing for the possibiity of a relationship in both directions

14

## one-tailed tests

### testing for rejection on one side of the sampling distribution

15

## independent samples

### samples in which measurement of a variable in one population has no effect on measurement of a variable in another

16

## related samples

### samples in which measurement of variable in one population may influence measurement of the variable in another
