A

In, 2004, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace” as a result of her commitment against deforestation in Kenya. She is the first African woman to receive this distinction.
She founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, in response to the phenomenon of deforestation and soil erosion, and in close collaboration with women from Kenyan villages.
In 1977, she was a member of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (Kenya National Council of Women).
